A little effort goes a long way: January Cure

{ Assignment #8: Set a timer for a quick closet cleanout }

If you’ve been following along, or if you’re new to the January Cure, you’ll notice that by far a majority of the tasks are bite-sized chunks that make a direct and significant improvement to the form and function of my home.  Most of the weekday tasks have been around 30 minutes to 1 hour.  The weekend tasks do take longer, but are fairly manageable.  One task has taken me longer than the others, the pantry, and I chug along completing little bits of the pantry while still completing the daily tasks set out by Apartment Therapy (the host of the January Cure).

This next assignment was to select a closet, any closet needing attention and not necessarily the messiest one, and spend 30 minutes cleaning and making improvements.  We were actually instructed to set a timer for 30 minutes, and only 30 minutes.  Again, this isn’t about perfection, but about improvement.  It’s knowing that, in life and in homekeeping, a little effort goes a long way.

Well, I set my timer for 30 minutes and 30 sections so that I could get a leg-up in getting the step ladder and setting it up.  Knowing that I only had 30 minutes helped me to move QUICK!

I had to start with putting the two Christmas décor boxes back on the top shelves of the bedroom closet.  We still have our Christmas décor up until February 2, when we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation, but these two boxes were taking up substaintial room in the closet and inhibiting the form and function of the space.  The boxes have been on the closet floor since Advent, when we got the boxes down.

After picking everything up, hanging things back on hangers, and making an assessment of the space, I was done.  I added ‘gift wrapping container contraption’ to our shopping list.  We currently put the rolls of gift wrap on top of the boxes on the top shelf, and each year the rolls come falling down and hit our heads as we try to get the boxes.

I’m already seeing a dramatic improvement in my spaces and year-over-year they improve all the more.  I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings!

How would spending 30 minutes in a closet make your space better?
